One Adventurous Tail
By Donna Mills
“T Bone!” an anxious voice exclaimed
through the screen door. Immediately,
a bundle of energy exploded toward a
woman on the opposite side.
In an instant, on the last day of
the year, one family’s anguish had
ended … happily, when Man’s
Best Friend reunited with
his family.
Posters depicting a
spunky little canine
appeared on local
church bulletin
boards, store windows and at the
local veterinary
hospital shortly
after T Bone
disappeared
on December
14. His soulful brown eyes
melted many
a heart, but no
one, including
those of us at the
cooperative, had
come across the
little adventurer.
T Bone’s incredible
journey began when
he and his Brazilian
Mastiff friend, Diesel,
broke free from their leashes
one frosty morning. T Bone’s
owner had taken him to work and
tied him outside so he could play with
the other dog.
The dogs romped wildly, unaffected
by the chilly air. In their exuberance, the
pair snapped their tethers and bounded
into the nearby woods.
T Bone’s master and the other dog
owner soon realized their canines were
missing and went looking for them. As
the bright afternoon sun morphed into
darkness, it began to snow.
T Bone’s search party looked for him
well into the night.
Diesel
made his way home at 2 a.m. the next
morning—but there was no sign of
T Bone. Snow pounded the area and
Portola plunged into its own ice age.
The next several days delivered a
mixed bag of heartbreak, anxiety and
hope. Mary, T Bone’s owner, spent day
and night searching for him, hanging up
fliers and calling everyone she knew to
see if they had seen the dog.
