Haunted
Encounters
Sometimes what goes
‘bump in the night’
can be frighteningly fun

Les Dougherty and Susan Curington sit on a bigleaf maple burl. It looks rough on the outside, but has highly
figured designs on the inside with many spirals and patterns, that makes it highly sought after by carvers.

wood-turned objects as gifts. “There’s a
saying in woodturning that goes, ‘There
are no mistakes with woodturning, only
firewood.’”
Les mostly sells high-end cutting
boards.
“It’s exciting to see trees I’ve known
my whole life become something spe-
cial for somebody or a work of art,” says
Susan. “For a lot of people, this is their
stress relief.”
Susan grew up with an appreciation
for the nature and beauty of the wood
around her. Les was raised with the same
appreciation for wood and craftsmanship.
“I just have a love for wood,” he says.
“I don’t even know how anything else
compares.”
North Woods has a year’s supply
of wood from its harvest, but also
works with the Oregon Woodlands
Cooperative, which provides marketing
and management services for members’
forestland. Les and Susan buy from
a group of 60 Oregon and southwest
Washington woodland owners who
no longer can sell their trees to the
construction market.
It is the time of year when ghosts, goblins and the all-around “creepy factor”
become sought-after entertainment.
Whether seeking out ghostly
encounters at haunted castles,
lighthouses and theaters, or braving
a ghostly walking tour, nothing gets
the blood racing like the element of
surprise.
The joy of the hunt makes for a
fun, unpredictable and bone-chilling
good time.
